Periodontics deals with treatments involving structures of the teeth and addresses bacterial infections that attack the gumline.  Periodontal Disease and Gingivitis is gum disease that, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss as a direct result of bacteria caused destruction of gum tissue surrounding your teeth. The initial sign of Gingivitis is typically inflamed gums which appear red and swollen as a result of bacteria and plaque buildup. Bleeding during brushing is another common symptom in the early stages of gum disease. During these early stages no permanent damage has been caused to teeth or tissue. It is advised to see a dentist immediately if experiencing these symptoms.

If Gingivitis goes untreated it can advance to the more damaging phase referred to as Periodontal Disease. The gums and bone begin to pull away from the teeth forming pockets where debris collect and can become infected. The infection causes ones immune system to fight the bacteria as the plaque continues to grow and spread along the gum line.  At this stage, if untreated, the immune system along with bone and connective tissue begin to breakdown resulting in tooth loss.

If experiencing any of these symptoms, seeing a dentist is highly recommended. Prevention and early detection is the best weapon against Periodontal and Gingivitis. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call today for a consultation. We are here to help.
